Light Painting

It’s annoying buying a nice all manual flash to use on and off the 20D but only actually being able to use it on the camera. I haven’t yet “splashed out” on a nice cheap wireless setup from eBay (they’re cheaper than a cord from Canon so why not I thought) and so I’m a little limited to what I can do with the 420EZ at the moment. In a flash (get it…) of inspiration a few nights ago however I realised that I hadn’t explored the only avenue of off-camera flash available to me: light painting.

Unfortunately on the night I realised this most of the UK was being blanketed in snow, but I couldn’t let that stop me could I?!

Rosco Filter Gels for Free!

Roscolux Fan I’d read this post on Strobist a while back now about getting a free filter gel swatchbook from Rosco – perfect for disecting and using on flash heads – but following the indicated link takes you to the US end of things. Today though I finally realised (Am I the human equivalent of “The Bear of Very Little Brain“?) that Rosco also have a UK site too and that us Brits can also order a nice thick swatch book to play around with… so I’ve just sent off for mine! You’ll be wanting the “Roscolux” collection just because it seems the one with the most gels, and also because if you do read Strobist – especially the “How to” on gels – the gels mentioned are from this collection. Sorted!

Wow, I don’t think I’ve written something quite so link-laden before!

22/02/07 Update:

So, almost 2 weeks after sending for a swatch pack and receiving nothing in the post I got an email from Rosco “thanking” me for my interest and that I should get in touch with my nearest “Stage Electrics” shop (Birmingham I think?) who would be able to fit me up with everything I need. So exactly why do you have a swatch request form on your site? *sigh*

Book: Photography (Teach Yourself)

Teach Yourself Photography Cover Photography (Teach Yourself) [Amazon UK link]

My first “recommended book” – I don’t intend to be doing lots of these as I’m not an expert after all ! – which I have already heartily recommended to two people. So heartily in fact that I permanently loaned out my own copy out to one person and then bought another a copy for someone else!

Review of the Year

Yes, I know, it’s the 2nd of February and I’m writing a post with a title like “Review of the Year”, but allow me to explain before you put it down to the author being a bit slow or a tad hasty depending on which year I happen to be on about!
