The Curse of the Cameras!
I sell the Ricoh, and then a few days later end up buying another camera. What is wrong with me?! Why does my camera collection never decrease in size?! WHYYYY?!?!

I think the word “fickle” is on the cusp of becoming a word of permanent usage on the blog here. Let’s explain the nature of the fickleness this time and get it out of the way: despite my effusive comments about it, I sold the Ricoh last week…

This seat feels a little uncomfortable, and I don’t like how I have to type out all these words on this keyboard all on my own. The temperature of the room isn’t quite right either, the PC in my room is far too loud and my music sounds rubbish through these speakers. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what happens to you when you buy a Jaguar XJ6.

I like cars. I like a lot of cars in fact, and although the Spitfire remains my one true love as far as automobiles go, there are a lot of different cars that take my fancy, and a lot of cars that actually, when it comes down to it, I wouldn’t mind owning for a while. This is how it’s always been; I always liked Spitfires but never thought I could afford one… until I realised I could. I always liked 205 GTIs but never thought I could afford one… until I realised I could. And so it goes on, until we get to where we are now, with the newest member of the family, a Jaguar XJ6, on the drive. You see, I always liked the XJ40 shape Jaguars, and in this case I knew they were so cheap I could afford to buy one… and then I realised I could insure one too…

It has arrived! A few days ago I bought a lovely condition Ricoh GRD on eBay (right down to the perfect boxes and manuals, which I always find an extra nice surprise!) and with it made a big decision about my future photographic exploits. You see, if you’ve been popping backwards and forwards to methinksperchance.net and the blog this last year you will have probably noticed the photographs and the blog posts spiralling into very small, sporadic fits and starts. Partly to blame is starting my job I’m sure, but in general it has to be said I’ve hit somewhat of a brick wall, photographically speaking. For various reasons - lack of time, lack of commitment etc etc - I’ve really not picked up a camera properly aside from the 4 days in September when I was on the 10CR with James, something that, at the beginning of the new year I am not happy about…

I imagine that post title counts as a rather obvious one, but for me it’s a statement that I hadn’t really thought about until a recent cataloguing of my negatives brought it to mind. Far from being something obvious and not worthy of mentioning, it is to my mind something quite important about the differences between working in film and digital…

The 2000 cleaned and ready to go…
I’m afraid I am the bearer of sad news; yesterday DWL left the Dawson household for good, the first car I’ve ever sold and one I wasn’t 100% happy with letting go either…

All the photographs from the 10CR07 - that’s these specially tagged photographs - were photographed on Ilford HP5 stuffed into a tiny Olympus XA2. I had originally planned on trying to buy a Fujifilm SuperMini to take with me, but why I wanted to cough up £30+ on a camera I had never tried when I had my £4 XA2 bargain lurking around I shall never understand…

It’s been a while since I last wrote anything for the blog, and it’s a while since I took part in the Club Triumph 10 Countries Run, but now the photoblog has been updated with the last of the photographs I took whilst on this wee adventure, I thought it was about time I got my writing fingers out and wandered them over the keyboard…

A new post, a new category, a new car!
So, the 205 GTI. Icon of the 1980’s, renowned for it’s exquisite handling (once you’d found out about the lift-off oversteer) and one of the first hot hatches to grace our streets. Many people will talk endlessly about the Mk1 Golf GTI (a very, very good car I’m sure, and worthy of much of it’s reputation), but the 205 GTI was also a bit special. In the words of that supposed motoring God Jeremy Clarkson “… [The Mk1 Golf GTI] is what we’re going to buy, and we’re not going to change our minds unless something comes along that is demonstrably better. Welcome everyone, to the 205 GTI. … and then there was the design. Ital had done the Golf and Ital is one of the great Italian styling houses. But Pininfarina is better, and Pininfarina had done the Peugeot.”.
